Food Commons Volunteer Activity – Visiting O.Park 1

2024-04-15

Food Commons volunteers are dedicated to the action of saving bread and meal boxes and helping others. Yesterday, they visited Hong Kong's first large-scale organic resources recovery center O.Park1. O.Park1 is the first facility in Hong Kong to convert food waste into electricity, integrating biodecomposition, energy recovery and organic fertilizer production. The center was built to reduce organic waste in Hong Kong while providing sustainable energy and resources recovery solutions. The daily food waste processing capacity is 200 tonnes.

The volunteers visited O.Park1 and firstly, through interesting animations, gained an in-depth understanding of the operating principles and processes of biological decomposition and methane gas power generation technology. They observed how organic waste underwent a decomposition process to produce methane gas, which was further converted into energy. The volunteers gained a lot of valuable knowledge and experience during the visit and learned about the importance of organic waste treatment and how to reduce reliance on landfills through biological decomposition and energy recovery. In addition, they learned how to convert organic waste into valuable products such as methane gas and organic fertilizers. Volunteers who brought containers could also take 200 grams of organic fertilizers home for planting.

The visit allowed volunteers to have a deeper understanding of the importance and feasibility of organic resources recovery and provided them with more professional knowledge and skills in their volunteer work at Food Commons. This would help them put the mission of saving food and helping others into practice better. At the same time, they could also pass on the knowledge to their families and other volunteers and raise public awareness and attention to organic waste recovery.

We hope to arrange more meaningful activities for our volunteers later. Anyone who is interested in saving food and helping others is welcome to join our volunteer team.
